Culture’s Effect on Information Technology Acceptance

The technology acceptance model (TAM) is a widely accepted IT acceptance model. When TAM is tested in other countries, the results are mixed (e.g., Switzerland (Straub 1997), Japan (Straub 1994; Straub 1997), Arabic countries (Rose and Straub 1998), and Hong Kong (Hu et al. 1999)). Culture is suggested as important in explaining different patterns of usage (Straub 1994; Straub 1997). However, existing studies have not established clear relationships between cultural variables and IT adoption and usage determinants. This study proposes a research model connecting one important aspect of culture, individualism/collectivism, to test the effect of culture on information technology acceptance in China. The survey instrument adopted from existing literature is translated into Chinese, pre-tested, and pilot tested in a field setting. The findings of this study are compared to existing studies conducted in several different cultures.
